The owner is friendly, the location is good, and there are lots of places to eat nearby. It’s a quiet area, about a 10-15 minute walk to the city centre. The shared spaces get a lot of attention and are kept clean, though other guests aren’t always as tidy. The toilets sometimes felt gross, with sinks full of hair, but housekeeping would clean them a little while later. A few things made the stay uncomfortable. The shower and toilet lights run on sensors and switch off after a few minutes. If you’re showering in the evening, it can go completely dark, and you have to wrap yourself in a towel while still covered in water and soap, open the door and trigger the sensor again. The fridge in the room is convenient but noisy. Our room faced the street, where passing cars could be loud, and the curtains weren’t decent enough to block the bright morning light. The walls are thin, so you hear people talking late, and the phone rang a few times around 2 or 3am during my week there. WiFi was poor in the room, and it needs a rubbish bin.

The owner-manager is friendly, responsive and helpful. They even checked whether I was finding my way around the house and city. The location is central, with lots of cafes nearby, including one across the road, and Coles is a handy 500 metres away. The shared living room isn’t especially pretty, but it’s spacious and gets natural light. There are fans for the heat, comfortable couches and a computer. The kitchen has plenty of cutlery, pots, pans and other cooking things, plus food lockers. There are storage lockers in the dorms for things like laptops, and each room has its own fridge, which I found useful. The bathrooms, kitchen and rooms are spotless. It’s very basic inside and not pretty, though at least it isn’t cluttered. The top bunk wobbles a little, and you can feel some mattress springs. My stay was very good overall. The other guests were quiet and respectful, with no party atmosphere, which I appreciated.

The hostel was clean and quiet, and it’s in an amazing location. The west end is our favourite part of Brisbane. We had the best stay and would definitely come back, especially for a longer stay.

I’ve been living in this hostel for six weeks and love it. It feels more like a home than a hostel, and it’s worth giving it a try. It’s a calm place rather than a party hostel, but bus 196 stops right nearby and goes to fortitude valley. There’s a Coles, little shops, a park and the river with the lagune close by. The train station is about a 10 minute walk, or 5 if you run. The kitchen and toilets are cleaned every night, and there are all the utensils you need. Every room has a fridge and fan, and the showers have hot water. The manager comes around 10am but isn’t at reception all day, since he has his own life. You can always call him, though, and he puts a lot of effort into making you comfortable. He’s really funny too. Love it!

The signs are scarce, so it’s hard to find this place, but it’s well worth it once you get in. I managed to be a complete nightmare during my two-day stay: I couldn’t get in, lost my key and left my cover-up behind. Patrick never ran out of patience and was always helpful, so thank you. The location is great too. West end is by far the best part of Brisbane, and there are fans in every room.
