Bungaree Station

We tried the self-guided tour today and came away really impressed. It’s great to see this pioneering family preserve such an important piece of South Australian history.

The old equipment is on display with information about its history, and you can explore the original buildings, from the Woolshed and Blacksmith's workshop to the Station Store Office, Homestead, and sheds full of old carts and vehicles. There’s a small entry fee, then you can browse the whole place freely. A few buildings have been converted into accommodation, and the Swaggie's Hut looks cute, secluded, and inviting. We visited in March 2026 after fellow travellers pointed us here, and we’re glad they did. Bungaree Sheep Station, north of Clare, is quite different from other attractions. It was established in 1782 by the Hawker family and is still run by Viki Hawker and her hubby, who were friendly and full of information. Very much worth a visit. Thank you.

The Council Chambers were comfortable and lovely, with a real historic feel. It was still cool in October, so we enjoyed a wood fire in the evening. The kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, lounge space, and outdoor area all worked well for us. We especially enjoyed the station’s farming history, including the old tractor sheds and huge shearing sheds. Our early morning 4kms walk around the area was one of the best, with wonderful views across the huge canola crops. We had a hunch Bungaree Station would be a great place for the four of us to stay, and it was. A big thank you to the staff, especially the 'plumber' and Vicki, who were patient and knowledgeable. We only stayed one night, though three would’ve been better.

Having family and friends there to help us get ready and clean up made our day even more special, and the accommodation was top notch. Bungaree Station was such a beautiful, welcoming setting for our October wedding, at a more than reasonable price. Vicki and the whole Bungaree team made the weekend easy with great communication and a real willingness to help whenever we needed it. We couldn’t have asked for a better venue. Thank you for all your time and patience, Bungaree team. It’s a day we’ll never forget.
