I first stayed at this guesthouse in 2002, when it was lovely. The original owners made it feel special with fresh flowers, cupboard space and a shared kitchen for preparing food. I’ve stayed here several times since, and it’s disappointing to see it become an overpriced backpackers. It was much better 20 years ago, and now the place seems to be going downhill as the guests get noisier. There’s no shared space to prepare food, and my room had silly ornaments on a bookshelf where I needed somewhere to put my things. The shower gel, shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom weren’t labelled, so I couldn’t use them. The whole house shakes when people walk along the hall, and the walls are so thin I could hear the person in room 4 snoring like a foghorn. I got no sleep for two nights. Guests seem to have little consideration for others in the shared space.

My wife found this place, and it turned out to be a great stay. It’s only a 10-minute walk from the main parts of Byron, and the women working here are so friendly and polite.

My partner and I loved staying in the Cockatoo room. It was peaceful and clean, with a simple, neat design that felt romantic, and we had access to a gorgeous veranda. Restaurants and the main road are only a few minutes away on foot, while the beach is about 15 minutes away. A lovely choice for a couple wanting a quiet, romantic break. 💕

For the price, I expected much better. There was no communal kitchen, the veranda and outdoor furniture were dirty, and the front yard needed maintenance. The room smelled mouldy, the leather sofas were worn and torn, and the handles were missing from the drawers in the tallboy. There was also a straw hat on a hanger as decoration, with a big hole in it. It didn’t look good, and I felt like I was staying in a two-star motel. One guest even told us to turn down the video we were watching on the veranda. This is a holiday, not a time to sit quietly. I’ll never recommend this place to anyone.

The hostess was caring and very helpful, and the bed and pillows were lovely and comfortable. I also liked the big shared fridge for keeping drinks, and the rain shower was awesome. It’s a charming timber home from 1910, converted tastefully into a six-room guesthouse. Set back from town and traffic, it’s so peaceful compared with a room downtown. I loved just sitting on the veranda daybed with a good book or watching the birds in the garden.
