We booked seven nights and left after one. This is not a resort, it’s a dump. The room wasn’t what we thought we’d booked, and three adults were squeezed into a small space. There weren’t enough towels or any pool towels, and there was no kitchen. Calling it a kitchenette was a stretch. The bathroom was disgusting, and dead insects were lying around like the place hadn’t been swept. The office staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. They wouldn’t refund us and only offered extra towels. Bloody awful place and people. NOT RECOMMENDED.

The pool area was genuinely lovely and well kept, and our room was spacious, comfortable, and functional. We appreciated the balcony, basic amenities, and a blanket, which came in handy during monsoon season when the nights could feel surprisingly cool. Clear instructions made check-in straightforward while reception was closed. We stayed three days and four nights as a couple. Still, Cairns Gateway Resort didn’t feel like a resort. We booked from Canada hoping for a special place to relax near the Great Barrier Reef, and honestly felt a little fooled 😅. There are no on-site activities, restaurant, or bar, and reception is rarely open, including Saturdays and Sundays. There was no room service during our four-night stay. We didn’t personally mind, but it felt unusual for a property marketed as a resort. The Wi-Fi was baffling. We had a password, but the connection barely worked and was almost unusable. We struggled to get online or make WhatsApp calls to family. After more than a month travelling around Australia, including national parks and basic motels, this was the only place where we had that problem. We know bugs are part of life in tropical North Queensland, but there were several dead insects in the shower when we arrived, making it seem as though cleaning had been rushed or missed. The fan cover was left on the floor, so we had to put it back ourselves, and the hot and cold taps were reversed, which we also fixed. None of those things was major alone, but they added up, especially for the price. The location is handy if you have a car, with Cairns town about a ten-minute drive away, but there’s nothing within walking distance. Similar-priced places nearby offer more services and amenities, so the value feels off. We paid over $500 for four nights and didn’t feel that was justified. Based on our stays around Australia, including Sydney, the Great Ocean Road, national parks, Port Macquarie, and Brisbane, this felt like a $100-a-night place at most. It also quickly became clear that many guests stay long term, for weeks or months, paying around $700 for seven days. That makes the pricing imbalance for short-term travellers stand out even more. As visitors from Canada, we relied heavily on reviews, which is why we’re writing one ourselves. This isn’t meant to be negative, just honest. There’s potential here, but future guests should understand what it offers so their expectations aren’t missed.

The service and reception team were welcoming and accommodating, but I was disappointed by the rooms. There was old mould in the bathroom grout, and the mattress felt like springs with a blanket laid over them. Although the rooms are non-smoking, smoke from other guests came in through the bathroom window. The walls barely blocked sound, either. A neighbour being sick woke me at 6am. The whole place badly needs a deep clean or a revamp.

Our stay was unfortunately very disappointing. There was no housekeeping during our visit, and basic things like shampoo, soap, a toothbrush, and toothpaste weren’t provided. The room smelled very unpleasant, and the electric kettle was so dirty it couldn’t be used. The service was extremely poor and well below acceptable standards. This didn’t meet even the minimum expectations.

The air conditioners were extremely noisy, and communication was poor. Even getting a simple towel change took three calls, and nothing was done. One of the most horrible and disappointing experiences ever. I wish I could give zero stars. Don’t go unless you want your trip ruined.
