The island felt like somewhere in the Maldives or Mentawis, with clear blue water, palms all around, and turtles everywhere. We had the place to ourselves apart from the wonderful caretakers, Al and Lisa, who were so helpful and reassuring to have nearby. I brought my girlfriend to Bedarra Beach House to propose, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. She said yes! If you want a luxurious tropical escape without leaving Australia, this is the spot.

The house looked just like the photos, maybe even better, and my husband couldn’t stop saying so. The bed was comfortable, and the kitchen had everything we needed. John, the owner, carried our luggage and the groceries, drinks, seafood, and meat we’d ordered ahead, using a mower crossed with a little tractor. We arrived by boat right at one of the two private beaches, though we did share it with two other people briefly, then went straight into the shallow water at Coomool Beach. John’s unhurried pace set the tone for a much slower holiday than our usual balanced beachside life. We’re grateful to John and Anne for sharing their home and letting us experience island life, even for just five days. It was the romantic getaway we could have hoped for, and my husband has earned his new title, “Best husband ever.” For privacy, bare feet, and very little human contact, this is it.

Bring your own supplies, and your own butler if you happen to have one. It’s a private little paradise where you can properly switch off. The boat from Mission Beach takes about 30 minutes.
