Fitzroy Island Resort

The Butterfly Bungalows room was a bit run down and could use some maintenance, but the staff, pool and pool bar were great. The location and beach access were lovely too, and it felt like a good place for young families. We booked a package directly with the resort that included breakfast, and enjoyed eating each morning with that amazing view. Staying overnight was well worth it for the sunsets, morning snorkelling, the stars, and having the beach to ourselves. We also walked over to Nudey beach, did the summit hike, and snorkelled right off Welcome Bay. Such a lovely trip to Fitzroy.

The island is beautiful, and Nudey Beach is well worth the 15-minute walk. That’s what earned the three stars. The resort and its service didn’t. I’m local and visit Fitzroy often, but the service has got much worse since my last visit. My friend and I came for a day trip, and it was disappointing to find so much off limits if you’re not staying overnight. Need the bathroom? You have to walk to the other side of the island because day visitors can’t use the reception toilets. You also can’t access the resort restaurant, so to refill a water bottle you have to walk down the island and buy water. The two workers at the hire shop were VERY rude. Their service put us off going back to arrange another hire. There was mould on the bathroom wall too.

Fitzroy Island’s natural beauty and sea life are hard to beat. We stayed three nights in a Welcome Bay suite, and the resort was fantastic overall. The staff were friendly, approachable, and happy to help. There were a few minor repairs needed around the resort, though nothing major. We also really enjoyed the food at Foxy’s and Zephyrs restaurant.

Fitzroy Island is a place I love as a local, but this stay was stressful from start to finish. I was there with my two kids, a son and daughter, and as a single mum the delays and room problems were especially hard. My headache got worse, and my son was tired and overwhelmed. We’re loyal customers of the Fitzroy Island Resort group and have been coming to Fitzroy since 2018, so it was sad to see how much had changed. I’ve never had a worse experience anywhere I’ve stayed, and wouldn’t recommend coming here. We arrived around 12 and things started off fine. At 2:30, I asked about checking in early because I had a headache and my son was overwhelmed. The staff member just said no, which felt rude. We returned at 3 and found a long line with one staff member helping everyone. After waiting about 10 minutes, we were told our room would be delayed until 3:30. When we came back then, we finally got into the Welcome Bay suite, but the sofa bed was broken. We had to pack everything up and move rooms, which took a while. We didn’t get into the replacement room until 4:30. It was older, with a crack in the corner, an old bathroom, and a broken tap. The bed was uncomfortable, and the staff were rude and didn’t seem to care. When we were told about the delay, the response was just “sorry,” which also came across as rude. We only received a free ferry back and a drink voucher. I’d like some kind of compensation, such as a free dinner or a free night’s stay for three people. This was meant to be a relaxing holiday, but instead it was all stress and worry. The walkways also looked unsafe, with holes and bumps, including on the section two stories up.
