The Barnhaus itself has a good layout for such a small place, and the composting toilet worked. The location is handy for the Devonport ferry and exploring the area. Still, we left disappointed and wouldn’t choose Compass Hut again. The property feels neglected. The advertised flower garden was gone, with tall, dry grass piled beside the hut, and the potted plants were dead. The Barnhaus floor was damaged, none of the outdoor lights worked, and the deck’s glass panels were loose and wobbly. A supporting board had fallen into the garden, so the balustrade felt unsafe. The dividing fence is also rotten and collapsed, leaving Barnhaus looking up at Arc House. It was uncomfortable getting things from the car while people were in the outdoor bath above, especially since the photos suggested they wouldn’t be overlooked. The deck table had no shade, so we enjoyed sitting there in the evening but couldn’t use it in full sun. The sun also beats on the windows. Inside, the mattress was comfortable, but the sheets were the scratchiest I’ve ever slept on. There wasn’t enough cutlery for two, and the advertised shower gel had run out. The key was damaged, and at one point we struggled to get out, so we decided it was safer to leave the door unlocked while inside. There was also an extension cord dangling over the kitchen sink. We were interested in tiny homes and had looked forward to the stay after seeing the lovely website photos. The old brochure describes Compass Huts’ environmental principles, but the hut runs on gas, and the brochure gives different check-in and check-out times. I emailed the owner to clarify something and never got a reply. With so many great and inexpensive alternative stays around Tasmania, this place needs care before I’d consider returning. The story behind Compass Huts is admirable, but the property seems forgotten, or perhaps under new management.

We stayed in the Arc Pavillon, higher up the hill, and wished we’d booked a longer visit so we could enjoy the balcony more. It’s just far enough from Devonport to feel like a different side of town, and the toilet was clean. The shower was my favourite part: three shower heads, a view across the farms, and a little enclosed courtyard behind the glass that made it feel like being outdoors. The place is styled beautifully and feels like a well thought out tiny home. It was warm during the day in the glass box, though opening the large doors brought in fresh air, and there’s a fan in the cupboard. Bring repellent if you plan to leave the doors open. Bring food along, too. There’s a mini bar to buy things from, which was a nice touch. I wouldn’t call it child friendly, since kids are so curious, but it’s perfect for a couple or somewhere to find solitude. We keep talking about the stay, want to come back, and have been recommending it to everyone. Well done to the girls, they’ve thought of everything. If you’re after a different experience, you won’t be disappointed. Eco sustainable luxury at its finest!
The kitchen was a little hard to use in such a tiny house, mostly because of where the power points are and the need for extension leads. It seems like an easy fix, though. We stayed in the Arc Pavillion and it was gorgeous. The outdoor tub was a great touch. I loved it here and can’t wait to come back to Tassie for a longer stay. Put this on your list when you’re in Tasmania :)
Sitting out on the deck with that amazing view was so relaxing, and the double shower was our favourite. We absolutely loved our stay in the arc pavilion. You’ve created a little slice of Heaven, and we can’t wait to stay again soon :)
Seeing the stars from bed was amazing. We loved the garden, the view, and being surrounded by nature. Our stay at Compass Hut felt magical, and you can tell a lot of work went into the accommodation. We really appreciated all the thoughtful touches from the girls.
