Comfort Inn Bay City

The owners made everything easy and were so accommodating. They welcomed us, asked if we wanted an upstairs or downstairs room, and showed us to it. This little motel may look unassuming, but appearances are deceiving once you step inside. Highly recommend. It’s cozy and clean, with a comfortable bed and a reasonable price. We stayed for two nights. The room was a good size and exceptionally clean, with good bathroom facilities and fresh, clean bedding and plenty of pillows. The AC works well, though it’s noisy. There were two chairs at a table but no sofa, since a small second bed filled the space where one might have been. The main bed was extremely firm, and if you’re used to a softer mattress you may struggle to sleep well. Maybe motels use firm mattresses because they last longer. Also, half the door’s security chain was missing, leaving only the knob’s button lock for night-time security.

I only stayed a night to avoid driving back to Melbourne. The location is fabulous, within walking distance of major shops and the waterfront, and the check-in lady was very nice. Room 8 on the ground floor looked good when we arrived. The bathroom was modern, but there were only two tissues left, which wasn’t enough for my friend. I also found a glass in the cupboard under the microwave to take a pill, and it had lipstick on it. The sofa arms were very worn. The king bed was the real problem. We knew as soon as we sat down what we were in for. Calling it firm is like calling wooden boards firm, except boards have some give. Concrete might be closer. I lifted the sheet to see what was going on: a thin foam topper over a standard mattress with a built-in pillow top, and still no give at all. It was one of the worst nights of sleep we’ve had in years. I shared with a friend because twin beds weren’t available, and we agreed a prison cell bed would probably be more comfortable. We’re both in our early 60s and left stiff and sore in the morning, without hanging around. Management, please replace that mattress. It’s unfit for purpose and could almost be a torture device. I hope the other rooms have better mattresses than the infamous Room 8 Mattress.

The bed was hard as a rock and really uncomfortable. When my partner and I arrived, we could smell dope coming from one of the rooms, and the lady was very rude to us.
