Quality Hotel Bayside Geelong

The renovated reception looked great, but the website didn’t explain that some rooms hadn’t been updated, and the price didn’t reflect that either. The photos seem to show the refurbished areas. We booked a water-facing room, which turned out to be untouched and reminded me of a very tired old roadside motel. It was clean, at least, but the rest was lacking. The kettle was ancient, and the fridge somehow warmed the orange juice we put in for the morning. The wall air conditioner didn’t respond to its controls at all, and the furniture looked like it had come from a hard rubbish collection. At nearly $400 for one night, I expected much better. The site also sells the booking as contactless, but you still have to go to reception to collect the key.

The hotel is a little away from the town bustle, so it’s quiet, but still within walking distance. We stayed in the new section and found the room clean, spacious and thoughtfully laid out. There was plenty of luggage space, lots of towel rails and hooks, room for toiletries, and a huge shower. Power points had both USB and USB-C, with a small sensor light by the bathroom and entry. The indoor pool, gym and outdoor courtyard were great. We booked secure parking, though free street parking is available on weekends if that suits you. Staff were friendly, especially the manager while we were there. I’d absolutely recommend it and stay again next time we visit Geelong.

We had dinner at Francas Restaurant, which has a warm, welcoming feel and a good wine and beer selection. Prosecco was my pick, followed by a Bellini. We ordered the Tonnato Dip, Rigatoni Ragu Alla Bolognese, Caponata Pizza and the kids’ Meatball Pizza. Compliments to the chef, everything was delicious. The Superior Twin was clean and classy, with room for me, my partner and our 12-year-old. The shower was huge, and there were lovely robes and slippers, air conditioning, a massive TV and nice amenities. Staff were friendly and easygoing. Check-in was straightforward online, with name and card details and an ID photo, plus optional extras like a platter or breakfast. Be prepared to upload the app, which works as the key for the room, car park, pool, gym and sauna.

The food was a real highlight and better than I expected. Service was top-notch too, friendly and attentive from the start. I found the room spotless, comfortable and quiet, so it was easy to unwind. A fantastic stay at Bayside Geelong Hotel and Apartments. I’d happily recommend it and will return.
