Mooltan House

The gardens were overgrown and dirty, and it didn’t feel like a retreat at all. The mattress and other furnishings looked about 100 years old and smelled of mothballs. I booked because the photos looked nice, but it wasn’t what we expected when we arrived, so we lost money. Definitely don’t recommend it. I wasn’t happy.

Eddy and Jenny have owned the place for nearly 30 years, and they’re polite, friendly hosts. We stayed in a small apartment with its own bathroom and kitchenette. The old house has plenty of character, plus a games room, library, small kitchen and private garden. It is a little dated, but there’s a path beside the property that takes about 5 to 6 minutes to walk down to the mineral springs. We’ll stay here again next time we’re in Daylesford.

It’s a shame, because this used to be such a great place to stay. I’ve been here three times over the years, and the property feels very tired now. Our room had a strong disinfectant smell, like a nursing home. The beds weren’t made up even though we were staying more than one night. There were food bits on the spoons, dead flies caught in spiderwebs, and nut shells on the floor from the previous guest. All in all, a big disappointment.

For what it costs, this was very disappointing, and our concerns weren’t handled well. The room had water hammer noises whenever other people used the water, and the floorboards creaked throughout the property. Our room was dusty and covered in cobwebs. The shower leaked across the floor and had mould, while the cups and cutlery were dirty. The larger property smelled very dusty and wasn’t welcoming. It definitely didn’t feel like a four-star place.
