The stairs are a bit of a slog after a full day skiing, but I’d happily put up with them for an apartment this good. The views are fantastic and the location is spot on, with self-contained apartment-style accommodation.

You get wide views across the ski area and mountains from 1750 metres up. The townhouses have a modern feel, with instant gas hot water, satellite TV and Foxtel, plus ADSL broadband available. There are about 10 self-contained places here. It’s a short walk to the village, lifts, runs and race club, and the bus stop is right next door. Access is via Arlberg driveway.

Altitude 1 was great, with well-equipped apartments in a lovely, quiet spot. You can ski down Higgi drive to Hotham Central, then walk back at the end of the day. Best place to stay at Hotham.

The views were great, but getting to our room was a real struggle because the path hadn’t been cleared. Four people would be a squeeze, and the pull-out couch bed was so uncomfortable. Even with the heater turned up high, it barely worked. Storing things at central was inconvenient too.

It’s comfortable and good value, though you’ll have a bit of a trek up and down the stairs when you’re unloading your gear.
