Spicers Guesthouse

We came in early December to celebrate our anniversary. I’d heard good things from family and expected great hospitality, but the breakfast service was awful. I’d paid for breakfast and was ignored for 20 minutes. No water, coffee or food order was taken, while nearby tables, including people who arrived later, were served. I finally went to the manager to explain and place our order. The wait staff never apologised. Other tables with slow service were offered extra coffees, mimosas or breakfast cocktails with apologies. We just got our food, with no apology or offer. It left a sour taste. I sent a detailed account with timestamps through the hotel’s review portal. They asked me to call, and I replied asking which number to use. Four weeks later, I still haven’t had a response. I’m appalled by how this was handled and the lack of apology from a hotel charging luxury prices and promising luxury service. A hotel can’t claim to care for guests if it won’t properly apologise, acknowledge criticism and investigate, or follow up with someone who took the time to write a review. P.S. I was the only Asian person in the breakfast area at the time. Everyone else was Caucasian/white.

Meaghan at reception, though I’m not sure I’ve spelt her name right, was fantastic and made our stay more enjoyable. The rooms were fabulous, and we’d recommend Spicers Guesthouse to anyone. The restaurant can be busy, but it’s lovely and has a great atmosphere for breakfast and dinner. Excellent from start to finish, thank you!

The hotel’s setting is beautiful and peaceful, and the surroundings made it a lovely place to unwind. Unfortunately, the staff’s manner affected our stay. They didn’t come across as friendly or welcoming, and on several occasions we felt told off instead of helped. It made us uncomfortable about approaching reception. With warmer and more approachable service, this could be an exceptional place.

Spicers Guesthouse has become our anniversary escape. My husband and I have stayed more than six times, and it still feels special every visit. We’ve tried the Hunter Suite and the suite beside the pool, and both were perfect in their own way. The rooms are cosy, well kept and make us feel at home. The fireplace is lovely in winter, and the pool and jacuzzi are bliss any time of year. For the experience, it’s incredible value. Romantic and relaxing, like a little slice of heaven. We can’t recommend it enough and can’t wait to return.
