By the time we got into bed, it was around 1am and my teenage kids were very upset. All three beds had hair and visible dirt under the neatly made sheets, and they felt the linen hadn't been washed or changed after the previous guests. We couldn't face using it, so we slept on top of the beds with towels underneath and our clothes for blankets. I wasn't willing to drive farther at that hour. There were other serious problems too. The toilet shifted and lifted at the base when used. The freezer had a strange substance and visible mould. A portion of long-life milk my son used was lumpy and curdled, and it was months past its best-before date. The fridge didn't seem cold enough. We arrived very late after a long drive, and check-in was easy: the key was in the door and the outside light was on, which we appreciated. The room looked old at first, but spacious and clean. A few dead bugs in a country motel wouldn't bother me, and that wasn't the issue. When I told staff the next morning, all I got was, “Oh, sorry about that,” with no explanation or effort to fix anything. This was below basic hygiene standards. I wouldn't stay again or recommend Kaniva Midway Motel. DON'T DO IT!

The location is really handy if you're driving from Melbourne to Adelaide. I was a little nervous after reading the earlier reviews, but for the price the rooms were actually pretty good.

Christina was lovely, and do order the cooked breakfast if you're staying. She's generous with the portions, and the breakfast room gets nice sun. My dog and I spent a couple of nights here, and I really appreciate that the owners welcome pets. The room looked dated, but the fixtures, linen, basin, toilet, and shower were clean. The shower was nice and hot, the bed and pillows were comfortable, and the towels were good quality. There wasn't a doggy smell. The neighbour ran the air con a lot, but I could barely hear it. Thanks!

The motel feels worn out and rundown, and reception was lacklustre. The room was clean, but falling apart. It feels like it's waiting to be bulldozed. I was also charged an extra $40 for my Assistance Dog, even though he is not a "pet". I later upgraded my view of the service: when I rang the next day, the owner/manager promptly agreed to refund the incorrect dog charge.

We had everything we needed in the room, including a nice hot shower with good pressure, and it was pet friendly, which worked out wonderfully for our dog. The receptionist and owner was extremely accommodating and very, very kind. She made a wonderful breakfast for me and my 5yo daughter, and we loved it. We stayed overnight on the way home to Victor Harbor from Melbourne. You'd be silly not to stay here. We'll definitely be back. Thank you for the hospitality.
