The night sky is great here, and the park stays very quiet. It’s about 2 km out of town, a handy base for exploring by car, with the artesian pool only a few minutes’ walk away. There’s a warm welcome at reception and a boom gate for security. The site is a huge gravel area split into plots, and the ground is so hard that putting pegs in can be a struggle. The office can help with that. There’s hardly any shade, so keep track of where the sun will be. We had an ensuite site and it suited us fine. The new amenities were spotless, and the pool has covered seating and a kitchen with a gas pizza oven. If you’re comfortable going down stone steps into a mine, don’t miss Chambers of the Black Hand. One man’s work has made it a really unique experience.

The public bore pool is just 200 m from the park, and Lightning Ridge itself is an experience like nowhere else. We stayed three nights on a powered ensuite site. The ensuite was roomy, modern and clean, and check-in was friendly and professional. The self-guided ‘door’ drives are well worth doing for a look at the history and resilience of the opal miners. Of those, I’d say the Orange door drive is probably the best.

The site was in great shape, clean, with good shower pressure, and the drive-through layout made things easy. It’s a great place to stay while visiting Lightning Ridge, and I’d happily come back. The only real problem was the dump point overflowing. Without the sewage issue, I’d have given it five stars.

We liked how safe the park felt and how close it is to the Artesian Bore Baths, just a 200 m walk. Town is only a short drive away, and the pool was a welcome way to cool off on those very hot Lightning Ridge afternoons. The park is really well looked after, with huge drive-through sites and immaculate amenities and camp kitchens. It was a little pricey, but worth it.

The site was level and generous, which made for a comfortable stay. BIG4 Opal Holiday Park has a fantastic main amenities block that could set the standard for other parks. The pool could do with a deeper clean and a bit more shade. We only stayed one night, though, and next time we’ll give ourselves longer to enjoy the place.
