The bloke who hired us the car was full of information and had some good suggestions for a day out. We had a fun day exploring the island in the Suzuki, which got us everywhere we wanted to go. It isn't a luxury car, but it was fun to drive, and our kids loved sitting in the open back. We'd definitely hire another car from them.

We rented a car from Arcadia Beach Guest House, though we didn't stay there. We really don't recommend hiring from them. The car didn't seem roadworthy and felt like a serious safety hazard. Its tyres were badly worn, the passenger seatbelt wouldn't fasten properly, and the engine stopped while we were in the middle of the road. Starting it could take 20 attempts, sometimes after calling the boss. When we called the owner about the problems, he was very rude and blamed us for them. Think twice before paying $120 a day for this car hire.

The drive back to our hotel after sunset was in complete darkness because the Land Cruiser's headlights didn't work. We had to shine our phone torches out the window to light the road. It was one of the most dangerous drives I've had. We were hiring the car for 24 hours, and had already noticed several problems at pickup: cracked tyres, bad brakes, a passenger wing mirror that didn't work, and very loose steering that made the mountain roads dangerous. When we spoke to the owner the next morning, he denied anything was wrong, was extremely rude, and offered no compensation. I wouldn't recommend this service.

We came for the day with our dog after researching and finding that the ferry and island were said to be dog friendly. But we were refused entry on the hop-on hop-off bus. Renting a car was our only option, and everyone except Acacia refused our lap dog. The Suzuki 4WD was rough and expensive at $90 for five hours, but we had no alternative. Dogs weren't allowed on any of the popular walks or at the locations we wanted to visit, so I'd leave your pooch at home.

We were left without a place to stay when a cyclone closed Nomads. They didn't help us find another hostel and told us not to come to the island. Luckily, we called this hostel instead. Ian, the owner, sorted out accommodation within minutes when we had nowhere to stay and could have been stuck on the island. The rooms were great value, and the location was perfect. Ian was always helpful with questions or ideas for things to do. Definitely recommend staying here.
