The interior is modern and the cleanest-looking I’ve seen in a working hostel, with a spacious kitchen, OK bathrooms, and a parking lot. There were a lot of Spanish-speaking caucasians. If you can find a job on your own, it looks like a decent place to stay, and some guests seem to be doing well there. But this is not a working hostel. They don’t find you a job, and what the website says about that should be changed because it wasn’t true for me. It felt as if the main management operation had gone out of business and the hostel was in hibernation. The manager seemed to collect money every day and then disappear. Changing the business model is fine, but they should make it clear when people book. I booked by email and asked whether they helped people find work. After that, I never heard from them again. I sent several emails and called, with no reply. Only when I visited in person did I find out they weren’t a working hostel anymore. He should have told me when I replied to his email five minutes after he sent it. The timing left a bitter taste. It felt like they knew I wouldn’t come if I knew the truth, but that once I arrived I’d have no choice but to pay 200$ because I had nowhere to go. I was there in March, when none of the town agencies were hiring anymore, so the lost time, money, and effort really mattered. There’s no card key or anything, and the doors aren’t locked. There are no lockers either, so you’re left trusting other guests even though every hostel has at least one thief. I’d never usually write a bad review that could affect someone’s bread and butter, but I’m writing this for other people who may have no way to find out beforehand and could get scammed. Be aware.

It’s a good community with reasonable rates, and it’s by far the best and most affordable place to stay in margs if you can get in. People are seldom allowed to stay unless they book well ahead by email, which means there are fewer people than beds and no crackheads or annoying aussie locals. The bunks are a bit awkward and have no ladders, and the rooms are somewhat crowded with not much storage, though thankfully they’re hardly ever full.

I was working in Marges for most of my 9 weeks here, and I had an absolute blast. The people became like family, and the staff were really friendly. Big shoutout to the manager, he’s a very cool guy. The dorms are quiet at night, with everyone respectful of each other, so you can get a good night’s sleep. The location’s handy for a quick grocery run, close to the shops. It’s such a nice, clean hostel, with good vibes and a sweet terrace to hang out on. Great for people working, enjoying Marges, or both. Shoutout to my hostel fam!

What makes this backpacker place so good is the warm atmosphere. People passing through mix with those staying a while, and the longer-term guests welcome newcomers until it feels like one big family. I’ve kept in touch with everyone I met and will see them again. The owner and staff are really kind and talk with everybody; nobody gets left out, and people look after each other. Best staff ever, especially the night manager. The accommodation is good too. Everything’s clean, the rooms have air conditioning, the beds are good, the kitchen is the best I’ve seen in a backpacker, and the deck is awesome. If you want winery work, the agency meeting point each morning is 200m from the hostel. It may not be the best accommodation I had in Australia, but it’s definitely the best backpacker place. Don’t hesitate, go there! :D

We stayed one night with two friends, one of whom uses a wheelchair. The front desk guy was very helpful and gave us a different key so he wouldn’t need to use any stairs. He also helped us plan our time in the region.
