Flagstaff Gardens Hotel Melbourne

We had a brilliant stay. Andreas and Kubra at check-in gave outstanding service, and the staff were wonderful throughout. Room service was very quick, the meals were excellent, and housekeeping was fabulous. The restaurant served wonderful food. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom felt luxurious and had great water pressure, and there was a good choice of pillows. The air conditioning was whisper quiet, the soundproofing was fantastic, and closet space was good. Thanks, see you next time. Victoria

The rooms were a good size, modern and clean, and it was an enjoyable stay. The location is handy for the park and Victoria Market, which has the best food in town. The air conditioning was loud, though, and all the little LEDs in the room made it hard to sleep. The buffet breakfast was okay to good.

There’s no kitchenette or microwave, just a kettle, and no balcony. There’s also no pool or spa. Still, the hotel has most of what you need and is reasonably priced for the location and amenities. The rooftop gym is great, with cardio equipment, plenty of weight machines and a spin bike, plus decent air conditioning. It’s across from a beautiful park, an easy walk to Flagstaff train station and a free tram stop, and reasonably close to groceries. The bottle shop is 800m away, with Melbourne Central and the CBD a short walk away too. Rooms are quiet, clean and comfortable, with daily cleaning, USB chargers, an ironing board, air conditioning and a hairdryer. The reception area is lovely, the staff are helpful, and there’s a restaurant and bar in the building.

We stayed for 4 nights in early February, and the three stars reflect a mix of good service and some real room problems. Staff answered our messages quickly before arrival. Breakfast staff were professional, efficient and very friendly, keeping tables clean and ready for the next guests. We could also leave our bags with the hotel before check-in and after checkout. The rooms felt old and tired, with chipped tiles and missed cleaning in less obvious spots. A light switch panel was sticky, and there was a blob of cream-like substance on the bathroom door. The walls are thin, so we could clearly hear the next room, and the doors slam loudly, especially in the morning. On Sunday, when I returned from breakfast at around 8.45am, a cleaner was already waiting outside asking when they could clean. I didn’t appreciate feeling rushed, especially on a Sunday. One pillow was old and lumpy. I asked reception for a replacement, but it didn’t arrive, so I asked again the next day. This time they brought two different pillows quickly, but without covers. We had to remove the cover from the lumpy one and were horrified by its condition. It should have been thrown out months or years ago. Breakfast had a good range of hot dishes, cereal and granola, and pastries, but the taste and quality weren’t what I’d expect at a 4-star hotel.
