Port McCrae B&B

The spacious place and beautiful backyard made for an amazing stay. The owners next door were lovely, and the Dutch man even lit the fireplace for me and gave me a delicious dark beer to try. I'd highly recommend staying here.

The owners were meant to confirm a few days before our trip, after I booked by phone two weeks in advance and was told to arrive after 2 pm. We drove two and a half hours, only to find the female owner seemed to have forgotten we were coming. I called to say we were already there, and her husband came out. He was lovely and showed us through the beautiful B&B, which has a great backyard and layout. The heating barely worked, so the place was cold, and the bedding wasn't suitable for winter. The toilet leaked at the base. There were only two towels, one face washer, and a bath mat, which made staying warm and dry harder without proper heating. At least it was a bed and breakfast, and there were cereals, juice, yogurt, milk, jam, chips, and other items. But some of the food was out of date, including yogurt that was four weeks past its date. It felt like leftovers from the previous guest. They'd provided things for toast but no bread. The female owner contacted me on the first day and said she'd come by for payment, so I thought I'd mention the food then, but she never came. On our way home, I contacted her to arrange payment and mentioned only the expired items so they could be thrown out for the next guests. She got defensive. I explained I just wanted to let her know because we'd expected food we could eat, but she called three more times and spoke rudely about it. She didn't offer a discount, a deal on another stay, or even something like a bottle of wine next time. The worst part was contractors waking us at 7:30 on our only sleep-in day while working on the owners' place next door. I wish we'd been told before booking, as we'd have chosen somewhere else or a different time. She stayed catty about the whole thing and was unapproachable.

A peaceful spot for unwinding, with the beach five minutes away on foot and local restaurants another five minutes beyond that.

Really lovely place, quiet and near everything.
