The Waverley International Hotel

The staff member was welcoming and polite, even helping correct our booking after we’d accidentally reserved for 2026. The EFTPOS machine wasn’t working, so we paid online. We were also given an unexpected upgrade to a king room. Those were good points, but I wouldn’t stay again. I was very disappointed by how the cleanliness and safety concerns were handled. The room on the third floor was a good size and had a bathtub and spa, but a strong perfume smell was overpowering. There was a large pink carpet stain, stains on the couch, and what looked like small black hairs in the crease of the bed sheets. The TV seemed old and YouTube didn’t work. Although parts looked renovated, there were residue-like marks on the walls, peeling doors and a very old toilet. The window had no fly screen, and there were cobwebs in a corner. Some areas looked clean, but that wasn’t the whole story. Under the bed I found used tissues, food scraps, wrappers and other rubbish everywhere. There were crumbs on the couch and brown splotches beneath the cabinet near the power point. The phone didn’t work either, and the smoke alarm had no flashing light. When we reported the mess, the staff member offered no solution or cleaning. About the smoke alarm, they said, “I don’t know what to do,” then said they would log it. They didn’t offer to move us or follow up. I was concerned about the safety issue, especially given that working smoke alarms are required by law. I’d choose the Ibis or Novotel across the road instead.

My daughter was in the area for a 10-day nursing placement, and the hotel made her stay comfortable from beginning to end. The area felt safe, and the location was very accessible, near The Glen shopping centre and plenty of restaurants. Parking spaces were available whenever needed, and getting into the room was easy and secure. The booking was straightforward. Lynn and another lovely receptionist, whose name I’m sorry I’ve forgotten, were welcoming and accommodating. Since my daughter was staying longer, the hotel kindly supplied a microwave. Her room was cleaned daily, and the staff did a great job tidying it. The shower pressure was strong and reliable. I’d happily stay again. Thanks to the staff for making her stay so good.

We stayed for one night because we had a New Year’s party nearby. The rooms were outdated and didn’t have towels or other basics. When we called reception, the woman wanted to inspect while my husband was showering. I flatly told her no. I left my earrings on the bedside table and forgot them when we checked out. We called three times and were told they weren’t there. I’ve now made a police report because taking someone else’s property isn’t okay. Don’t stay here.

The bed was okay, but the rest of this tired old motel was pretty average. The sofa was so uncomfortable it was impossible to sit on, and breakfast was nothing like the advertising suggested. For a place with such a grand name, it’s disappointing. Next time we’d pay a bit more and stay at the Ibis.
