Getting to the beach on foot was easy, and Woolworths, Aldi and other shops are roughly 1.5 to 2 km away, so we drove into town to shop. Inside, the internet was okay and password protected. I used my phone hotspot for a more secure laptop connection. The small smart TV worked with our own Netflix and Prime accounts, though the sofa was very uncomfortable. We had to push the dining table against the wall when we weren't eating to free up living room space. The kitchen was okay but short on plates and bowls. We used our own induction stove even though there was a hot plate. The two bedrooms were basic and cramped, right beside each other. Their beds took up most of the space, and my wife and I kept bumping into each other. The courtyard door wouldn't open all the way, so we had to shut it, move aside, open it halfway, then slide through. The bathroom was good and had a washing machine, but there was no power outlet near the sink for my toothbrush charger. I had to charge it on the washing machine using the outlet there. There was no soap and not enough towels for our seven-day stay. Luckily we brought liquid soap, and after my wife called, we were able to get more towels and toilet paper. There wasn't a staffed reception, just a phone number to call. The aircon remote had no batteries. When I checked it, I saw a message saying it was ‘under repair’. Reception confirmed the aircon was broken and had been waiting for repair for two weeks or more. We weren't offered any compensation for the faulty appliance. I can only give this COMOM lodge apartments two stars.

Como Lodge turned our family holiday into a waste of a seven-hour drive to Merimbula. We're now stuck in accommodation that's completely unsuitable for us. Less than 24 hours before we were due to arrive, they cancelled our booking, saying there were “plumbing issues” and no plumbing available on weekends in Merimbula. A Google search suggested that wasn't true. They called again 22 minutes later, saying they'd had a “last minute cancellation”, but we'd already booked somewhere else in a hurry because we were leaving home in 12 hours to start the drive.

The unit might be older in style, but it was fresh and clean when we arrived, with comfortable beds and everything we needed: an iron, washing machine, hairdryer, utensils and more. There's a BBQ, and a little off-street parking for boats up to about 20 feet. Management gave us room for our tinny and some local fishing tips that helped us find what we were after. We'll be back. Thanks, como lodge. It's a handy spot for fishing, swimming, walking or surfing. You can start a five-kilometre morning walk to the northern headland, aquarium, cafe and fishing platform, then follow the boardwalk over the bridge and around the lake. There's a takeaway shop about 100 metres around the corner, and coffee by the inlet about 200 metres away.

Dean, the owner, is a ripper bloke, and his cat Sox is lovely too. We felt welcome from the moment we arrived. The accommodation was clean and a great place to relax. I'd highly recommend giving Como Lodge a go if you're looking for somewhere to stay.

We'd booked a stay to attend a funeral, but the Covid lockdown stopped us from going ahead. We were less than a week from arrival and the lodge still didn't charge us. Their kindness really surprised us, and we were extremely grateful. We'll book there next time once the lockdown is over.
