The lake was completely still, and the view from the hotel was fantastic. We stopped for lunch on Australia Day after deciding on a whim to take the highland Lakes route from Devonport to Hobart. It was unusually hot and sunny, with no wind or clouds. The steak was the real highlight. My eye fillet came with salad and chips, and it was huge, nicely charred outside, and tender and moist through the middle, cooked exactly medium. The chips were hot and crisp, and the coleslaw had spring onions and just the right amount of dressing. The waiter explained it was coleslaw, and table service was a nice touch too. One of the best steaks I've had in ages, easily better than the Ball and Chain in Hobart. The bistro and bar staff were really friendly as well. We'll definitely be back.

The seafood was very tasty, but I ordered chowder and was served something more like bouillabaisse. It was delicious, just not the white, milky, creamy dish I’d expected. A bit odd to get something so different from what I had in mind.

We had our work Christmas lunch here a few days ago, and everyone left well fed. My Crispy Skin Ocean Trout was delicious and a popular pick at the table. The other meals looked just as generous and good, and the food, drinks, and service were all spot on. The pub itself is gorgeous, with lovely scenery both there and along the drive from Hobart. I also love a pub with a good open fire, and they have some of the best I've seen. There’s an area out back for caravans and motorhomes too. Definitely a place locals and travellers should add to their must-do list.

The fishing cabins are great, and I’ll stay here again. The beds and linen were extremely comfortable, and breakfast had tea, coffee, cereal, and toast. Such good value, with really friendly staff and an amazing pub.

Our four-legged mate was welcome at the camping grounds, which was a lovely touch. We spent two nights at the Great Lakes hotel and the service was faultless from start to finish. The rates were more than reasonable, and the food was amazing. Credit to James and his team for building such a great destination for visitors and Tasmanians. Thanks for the hospitality, we’ll be back.
