We’ve eaten at this pub with family at least once a month, but after this lunch we won’t be back. My meal arrived cold after everyone else had finished, and my son had to ask for it. The buzzer had been taken when the others’ food came, but nobody let me know mine was ready or brought it over. It was sitting on the bench. The trouble started when the very tall guy at the bistro till forgot to ask for my members card, and I forgot to show it. When I pointed it out, he shrugged and said, “Oh well.” I went to the bar to ask if I could redeem the points or do something about the nearly $10 difference for six of us. He came over from the bistro and told me how much it was and that I didn’t need to complain. I said I hadn’t even spoken to anyone. He went to the till, threw $10 at me, and gave me a frightening, sinister-looking stare with a smug smirk. He was extremely rude, and the whole thing ruined my day. The bar staff have always been awesome, though. I’ve never had anyone look at me like that before.

The Krappyioke was fabulous and the hotel had a good vibe. We had a great stay, apart from the kitchen service. At 8.10pm we tried to order and were rudely told the kitchen was closed, even though six dockets were still waiting to be cooked. I’d first called from our room and was told they couldn’t take phone orders and that we had to come down. We got there within five minutes, only to be told the kitchen was closed. The bar staff were busy, but a smile wouldn’t have been hard.

Friday evenings have Balcony Beats outdoors upstairs from 5.30-7.30, with house music drifting over town like a love letter. There’s karaoke downstairs afterwards if you’re still up for it. The Middle pub has a vintage lounge feel, and the crackling fire downstairs keeps everyone warm in winter. Meals are great value at a fast, friendly $20, and drinks are reasonably priced. Download the app for local member rates. A great pub to go to in Mullumbimby.

We liked the food so much that we came back. Everything was $20 and really good. I had one of the best plates of nachos I’ve had in a while, and my partner was very happy with the lamb shank.

The Mexican parmi was great, and my partner enjoyed the BBQ ribs. Honestly, that was the best schnitzel I’ve ever had. The service was lovely too, with really nice people. Stop in for a good pub meal if you’re in the area.
