We had lunch outside in the beer garden on a warm, sunny day, and ours was the only table in use out there. The Clarendon is close to the Civic Theatre. My husband had surf and turf with salad and chips, which apparently went down easily. I shared the entree seafood platter with a friend, and it was plenty for two. The seafood was perfect: around six huge prawns, very fresh, plus salt and pepper squid, lovely light crisp fish bites, salad, and sauces. It wasn’t cheap, but we couldn’t finish it and still had some squid left. I enjoyed it more than the expensive ‘top class’ restaurant overlooking the courtyard, where I ate last week and felt disappointed. I’ll happily go back to the Clarendon.

The beef cheek was impossible to fault, melt in your mouth with creamy mashed potato and veg. My wife had the Karaage chicken, and both meals tasted great, arrived in 15 minutes, and were nicely presented. I ordered the slow cooked beef cheek for $38, while hers cost $24. We had dinner there before a show at the Newcastle Civic Theatre on Saturday 22 November 2025. Booking was easy, and arrival and seating went smoothly. It’s understandably popular before theatre shows, so definitely book a table. It’s not a cheap meal, but the quality is top notch.

We had burgers and chips with Stone & Wood beers on tap, and the vegan burger had a super fresh house made patty. It’s a lively, busy spot with good food, live music, and a great beer garden. A good place to meet up before heading next door to the Civic Theatre to see Carl Barron!

Dropped in for the Monday steak special. The steak was really juicy, served with fries and salad. Nice beer selection too. I’d definitely come back.

The location is fantastic, and the food was great. The hotel itself felt very dated compared with the online photos, more like a motel above a pub than a four star hotel. Service was pretty mediocre, with most staff seeming inconvenienced whenever we tried to order. The stay was okay, but the facilities and service didn’t feel worth the price.
