Haus Accommodation - Hostel

The rooms and halls smelled awful, and the kitchen was missing washing-up liquid and towels. The facilities were very inadequate. I raised the problems with staff during my stay and nothing changed. I also emailed afterward and was ignored. A terrible experience. Given the price and the atrocious standard, it feels like they're ripping off travellers. Avoid this place.

This was a disaster. On my previous trip to Perth as a tourist, I'd stayed at another hostel. For my working holiday this time, I chose this one because it was cheaper, since hostels in WA cost much more than on the east coast. The bathroom setup felt unsafe. There were no locks, only curtains, and the entire bathroom area, showers included, had just one door with no lock, so men could walk in. They didn't provide toiletries, which was fine, but the showers were filthy, with old grime and hair blocking the drain. It looked like they hadn't been cleaned in ages. The facilities seemed very old and never updated. Some chairs were nearly falling apart, while others had already collapsed. When it rained, the hallway ceiling leaked, and no one dealt with it. There weren't even buckets to catch the water. The room had lockers but no keys, and they couldn't be secured with your own padlock either. Making your own bed and stripping the sheets at checkout was fine. But I never saw anyone vacuum or clean the room floors, and it felt as if the owner only cared about making money. If you're coming to Perth for a working holiday and trying to save on accommodation, be prepared for very poor quality at cheap places. In the eastern states or even Tasmania, you could get somewhere much nicer for the same price.

The location is great, it was quiet, and the bathrooms and kitchen were kept in good shape. The place has potential if the owners attend to some small things. As it stands, though, it feels sad and unloved: bare walls, dead plants, broken TVs on the floor, and no comfortable place to sit and relax. You can feel every wire in the mattress when you lie down. The female bathroom has three showers, but only two work properly. The other just leaks. Kitchen pots and utensils were in pretty rough, even worrying-looking condition. The shared rooms were fine in principle, but felt unhomely. I've stayed in several hostels, and this is one of the five saddest. The top bunks have no accessible outlets. There are no privacy curtains on the bunks, so one girl sharing my room used her sheet for privacy. There's no personal reading light, just one bright white office light that illuminates the whole room, and no small shelf beside the bed for belongings. Those changes would make a big difference. The girl who checked us in seemed to be having a bad day and wasn't friendly. Before even welcoming us, she charged an extra 20 AUD in case we left dirty dishes in the sink. The hostel introduction wasn't very helpful either. I checked out without ever finding the WiFi password, and there wasn't even a sign. They don't supply towels, and charge $10 for one, which is crazy.

Friendly staff and a really comfortable hostel. There's a kitchen, laundry, and a nice outdoor spot where you can relax or just sit quietly. The staff also speak Italian, so no worries if your English isn't great. Recommended!
