Good location, but never again. My clothes were stolen, I didn't get my $180 deposit back, and Gumtree had plenty of cheaper houses at the same quality. We froze most of the time in winter because we weren't allowed to use the dorm heater as it was considered too expensive. Laundry cost a lot, there was no privacy or locker, and the Wi-Fi only worked about half the time. The manager also wanted to charge extra fees for lunch. He took too much money from me. I showed him the calculation error and explained how much he still owed me. He started shouting that I had five minutes to leave Shannon House or he'd call the police. I've never had such an offensive, harassing host.

I complained to the new manager, roger, that the kitchen is often left unclean. I guess he doesn't care. I hardly see him, so there's no chance to tell him. He's only there to collect rent. I also complained about someone in my room making noise while I sleep. He lost his keys about a month ago and keeps asking me for mine. The manager did nothing, since that person was staying longer than me. I guess he takes sides.

The hostel feels more personal than most because it has fewer guests, and there’s a nice mix of students, travellers and long-term residents. It’s in Subiaco, close to Perth, UWA, trains, buses, shops, cafes and bars. The building is a beautiful, large Federation house that’s been restored and extended, with modern facilities and very good value. It’s well managed and deserves a place near the top of anyone’s list. The website is old and really doesn’t show the place properly.

One good thing is the mix of people from different countries living here. We could share both happy and sad times with each other. But the pipes are broken, the dorm feels damp, and the sound insulation is poor. The rent also isn’t competitive: a bed in the five-person dorm costs $150 a week, and you can find a single room for that price.

The occupants were nice, and it was quiet and peaceful. The place feels homely, clean and well presented, with a great location. Food storage and the fridges could use better organisation, since things seemed confusing and scattered.
