The Shiralee - Hostel

I spent four months here, and the women at the office were all lovely and did a great job. It was always clean and quiet, even though I go to bed early. I miss the property and the area near to the CBB. If I return to Perth, I already know where I'll stay.

My friends and I stayed three nights. The first two were fine, but Saturday night was a very different experience. If you want a quiet hostel on Friday or Saturday, this may not suit you. You could look at other hostels nearby where the owner keeps firm control of noise, such as Billabong Backpackers Resort Hostel. I was sad to hear about this place from my friend. Staff told me, “It's always hard to control on a Friday and Saturday night.” The person in charge also seemed unable or unwilling to deal with the noise. After showering, I had to walk through the kitchen and living area. One resident stared at me, made a loud shushing gesture and prompted others to do the same. It felt intimidating and inappropriate, especially as they seemed to know I had reported the noise. Nothing like that had happened on the other nights. The CCTV footage should confirm my account if the owner reviews it. I also messaged the owner about the residents' behaviour and haven't received a reply. Guests who raise reasonable noise concerns shouldn't feel harassed. If you expect staff to protect guests' right to rest and want a respectful environment, I wouldn't choose this hostel.

When you're away from home, feeling safe, included and having some privacy really matters. At the Shiralee, I felt part of a big family, and the roommates were amazing and respectful. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful. I've stayed at many Perth hostels, and this is easily the best. It's a good place to feel at home and work out your first steps after arriving in Australia. I'd recommend it if you're trying to find a good work-life balance. For ten days, this was fine as the cheapest hostel option around Perth. The rooms were okay but cramped, and the kitchen, communal space and bathrooms were clean. Bus stops nearby make it easy to get around, or it's about a 30-minute walk to Elizabeth Pier. The thin walls mean you hear everything, and backpackers don't always keep quiet after 10:30, so earplugs might help. Alottttttttt of French people.
