The Caledonian Inn

We paid, but ended up leaving. There was no microwave, people were sitting outside our room drinking, swearing, and making a lot of noise. The privacy blind was broken, and the door had no latch to keep it securely shut. It didn't feel safe or family-friendly. That first impression was bad enough to make me say I'd never return to Port Fairy. I love water environments, but this experience has put me off the town. I'll tell all my friends what happened. We moved to a more family-friendly room at extra cost, and it was well worth paying more.

The rooms are tidy and well looked after, and we were able to check in a little early. Room 7's shower was a problem, though. The water flow wasn't strong, and getting a comfortable hot and cold mix was very difficult. If other rooms were showering, you had to move around to get wet. People smoking on the small verandahs made it unpleasant for non-smokers, and parking in the little courtyard was tight. The location is central and there's an excellent pub attached, though drinks can be expensive.

The Caledonian Inn and its "The Stump" Pub have a very Old English feel, with a terrific atmosphere in both the pub and restaurant. There was a great range of dishes on the menu, and the staff were friendly and provided great service. It claims to be the "oldest licenced Hotel in Vic" (est 1844), though who knows? Well recommended.

We've eaten here a few times and always enjoyed the meals. This time I was shocked that a glass of wine and a Guinness came to over $32. I can't justify that price.
