BIG4 Port Hughes Holiday Park

The powered ensuite sites were good, and we had a really nice stay. The pool was a highlight. Some shade around it would help on sunny days, maybe umbrellas. Great location, and we’ll definitely come back.

We left and found somewhere else to stay at short notice, which cost us extra. With the extreme heat and our two young children, we didn’t feel there was a safe, practical option to remain in the cabin. The air-conditioning wasn’t working well enough for it to be habitable, and we couldn’t see current electrical test and tag evidence on the appliances. We raised this with management as soon as we arrived. After discussing it, it was clear the problems couldn’t be fixed within a reasonable time. We’d booked and paid for the BIG4 accommodation in good faith, but management still refused a refund. The Holiday Park Manager replied in writing: “There will be no refund for your cabin as the cabin was checked on your departure day with everything working fine in there. Have a nice day.” That felt dismissive and didn’t match what we experienced. It also didn’t address our concerns about consumer and safety obligations. We believe acceptable quality and fitness for purpose are required under Australian Consumer Law, and that essential services failing in extreme heat is a major failure that entitles a consumer to a refund. We’re escalating the matter to Consumer and Business Services (SA) and SafeWork SA to have consumer compliance and safety standards reviewed. The accommodation itself was disappointing, and so was management’s unprofessional and, in our view, legally flawed response. There was no resolution, just a fob-off like their reply below. Until this is dealt with appropriately, we can’t recommend staying here.

The staff at Port Hughes Holdiday Park were so friendly and helpful, and the pool was a lovely place to unwind. Shops were easy to get to, and the beautiful beach was only moments away. The ensuite was acceptable for our stay, though it wasn’t the best. We had a very enjoyable time. Thanks to the team!

Hiring a paddle board or kayak was good value, and the staff even took them down to the beach for us. Beach access is great, though walking to the jetty and general store means going back around because the gate is locked. The pool was okay, but felt a bit small when crowded on a hot day, and there was a lot of loose dirt around the place. The standard cabins at $300 a night didn’t seem worth the price.
