Breakfree Port Pirie

The kids having a little room of their own, with single beds, was a lovely surprise in our family room. We were a family of four staying for just one night, and had a great experience. It was very hot while we were there, so the pool and air conditioning were much appreciated. The bedding was the most comfortable we had during our seven day road trip, and the towels were huge and fluffy. Very happy!

The room was decent and covered the basics, though there’s room to improve. I’d give it 3 stars. Staff, on the other hand, were helpful, polite, and quick to respond. Their service deserves 5 stars. I had a pleasant stay overall.

The rooms are decent, but at $150 a night I expected a bit more. The TVs are so small they’re nearly unwatchable, and there’s no cutlery, plates, or toaster. Even after I asked for the room to be cleaned, they didn’t top up the coffee or sugar. You can hear boots and doors slamming, enough to shake the windows. I left my fob in the room and was given another one, but they disabled the first without telling me. After work I had to wait 15 minutes for reception to be free to sort it out. A very mediocre visit.

The pool itself was clean, though the area around it wasn’t maintained and rubbish stayed in the BBQ area for our whole visit. Reception was friendly, but no staff greeted us while we were walking around. The sheets and bedding were clean; the rest of the room was very run down, smelled terrible, and wasn’t very clean. There were marks and dirt all over the walls, the carpets badly needed replacing, the aircon was dirty, and the downlights were extremely dim and need replacing, with one working only intermittently. The shower head was held up with cable ties. It was replaced while we were out, but still leaked, and the shower screen leaked all over the floor. The plug was badly mouldy. The spoons and mugs for tea and coffee were filthy, with dried yoghurt and food on the spoons and dried coffee in the cups. Housekeeping should keep an eye on that. Cobwebs covered the ceiling, and a bright blue light on the roof flashed all night. There was a big gap under the front door, so wind blew dirt in, and if another room was smoking you got hot boxer by second hand smoke with the kids. Some plates, bowls, other utensils, and perhaps a toaster would help. I think management is trying to sort things out and would try again, hoping standards improve. I look forward to seeing what this hotel can become. Update 15/12/25: Booking.com told me they contacted the property about my request for a partial refund because of these issues. The property replied that there were no issues, even with photo evidence. That’s very poor management and customer service.
