Cape Nelson Lighthouse

Just visited, no need to stay. It was easy to access, relaxing, and there was wildlife to see. The views were amazing, especially the sunset and the coastal swell crashing into the rugged rocky shore. Surf and nature at their finest.

We visited on Monday 2/3/26, and the cafe 'Isabellas' was closed that day, even though the ladies at the Portland information centre had said it had recently reopened. There are toilet facilities, but they don't seem to open when the cafe is closed. I wish we'd known in advance that lighthouse tours could be booked, so check whether you can arrange one before your visit. For sightseeing, it was an easy walk from the carpark to the lighthouse. A little further on, there's a coastline viewing area, then a short clifftop walk takes you to more great views looking back at the lighthouse and buildings. There's also a memorial for a young man lost at sea, with stones stacked on top as a lovely gesture of remembrance.

The views from the top are a blast. Gordon, the lighthouse guide, is friendly, authentic, and knowledgeable, and the lovely family running the restaurant were wonderful. The restaurant's products are high quality.

Seeing kangaroos in the front yard as dusk fell, less than 10 metres from the front door, was incredible. We were allowed to step outside and take photos, which was amazing. My wife and I recently stayed in the Head Light Keepers cottage, and the accommodation was amazing, with great service and unexpected extras like bacon and eggs for breakfast. The lighthouse is less than 100 metres from the door, and the views and whole experience were just as amazing as the location.
