Communication was nearly nonexistent. Most of the contact numbers didn’t work, and even after we got through, we sat in the living room with no directions and no idea where to go. We were eventually assigned room 8, but its patio door wouldn’t lock. Moving rooms didn’t help much, since several other doors and windows also failed to lock properly. There were no staff on site and no other guests around. We were three girls staying alone, and felt seriously unsafe. We ended up sleeping with a hammer we found in the garden, which is pretty crazy, but that’s how uneasy we were. The property felt abandoned. Outside was a filthy, unused school bus full of rubbish, and the deserted tavern next door added to the whole “apocalypse” atmosphere. Nothing seemed properly cleaned: the bathrooms were dirty, the beds didn’t look fresh, and the place felt neglected throughout. One friend also thinks she was bitten overnight. One star is generous. If basic security, cleanliness, or even minimal communication matters to you, stay somewhere else.

We couldn’t stay because of the conditions, and had to drive all the way back to Melbourne, a 3-hour drive, to find somewhere else. Everywhere along the Great Ocean Road was fully booked. The hostel felt neglected and unhygienic. The sheets were dirty, the floors hadn’t been cleaned properly, and the supposedly clean kitchen dishes were still dirty and unusable. The room smelled strongly of mould, and the rusty showers clearly need replacing. We also felt insecure with doors left unlocked and no reception or staff around. Very disappointing. I wouldn’t recommend it.

It’s worn around the edges. The fly screen in our room was torn, and the shower heads were loose or didn’t work properly. Still, if you’re desperate for somewhere to crash for a one-night stop, it has the basics. The main lookouts are nearby.

I was cycling from Warrnambool toward Geelong and this made a good first-night stop. It was off season, so the hostel felt pretty empty, and arriving at sundown to complete silence was a little strange. I had what I needed: kettles, plates, instant coffee, hot water, clean linen, a towel, and a room charging point with an extension cord. The place is worn but not filthy. I met two other guests later and we had a great time. It was a lifesaver on my ride. Happy travels!

The unit was clean and comfortable, with complimentary tea and coffee. We loved the peaceful natural views, and found it good value for the money. The owner wasn’t on site, but the instructions for getting into our room were clear, and they were easy to reach by phone if we needed help. In the evening we took a short walk to the nearby Princetown Wetlands Boardwalk. A memorable, relaxing stay.
