Caledonian Inn

The balcony is a nice spot for a drink, with a good view, and the pub has plenty of history and a great atmosphere. I gave it two visits before writing this. On our second evening, we had natural SA oysters with lemon to start, but they were disgusting. They didn’t make us sick, fortunately, though they tasted like plastic from an open fridge and left a bad aftertaste. We left and went to the local Mexican for dinner because we didn’t want another disappointment. The first night, I had the salmon downstairs after a drink on the balcony. The waitstaff were friendly, and the salmon was nicely presented with broccolini, but the broccolini was too lightly blanched for my taste. The sauce tasted lovely and had a good consistency, while the salmon itself was dead. At that price, overcooked salmon wasn’t good value. It’s a nice place for a drink and snack, but this iconic venue needs to fine-tune the food menu and freshness. If you plan to dine there, ask how fresh the oysters are or how long they’ve been defrosted.

Tried the Cally Burger for lunch at the Caledonian Inn today, and it was awesome. The juices and all the flavours mixed together really well. Only letdown was that it should’ve been quite a bit hotter. 4.5/5.

Huge portions, wonderful food, and a cozy dining room. Service was fantastic, attentive, and understanding.

We had a couple of meals here and also came by for evening drinks while staying in Robe for a few nights at accommodation just behind the Caledonian. The food was delicious enough that we finished the generous portions, even though they were probably more than we needed. The weather outside was cold and windy, but inside the pub was warm and welcoming. Staff were all really friendly, with exceptional customer service. There was a great vibe, with tourists like us and plenty of locals all enjoying themselves. We’ll definitely return next time we’re in Robe.
