The dog beach is just across the road, and my wife and dog had a wonderful time. The rooms were comfortable and really beautiful, and the location was lovely. Frances was very helpful, quick to respond, and even offered us an early check-in. It’s about a 10-minute drive to Byron Bay, and I’d happily stay here again next time we’re in the area.

The location is excellent, with the beach only a two-minute walk away, and the owners did get in touch to offer support when we needed it. But after waiting a few days to see if my first impression would change, I still feel the same: this was by far the worst accommodation we booked during our three weeks travelling around Australia for amenities. At Tallow Beach Motel the rooms feel tired, small, very basic and dated, probably from the 1970s. There’s straw- or hay-like wall covering, and with the humidity it gives off an unpleasant smell. Maybe it’s from chemicals used because of pets, but I’m not sure. The furniture is old, with nothing new in the room. It needs a thorough clean, including the windows, under the bed and the outside area, as well as renovation and better ventilation, especially in the bathroom. The fabric shower curtain cost $10 and sticks to you after the first shower. The ceiling fan is so noisy and vibrates the whole room, so we couldn’t sleep with it on. For a family room, there isn’t even a curtain to separate the space, so it’s hard to see how it’s meant to suit four people. Noise carries constantly from other rooms, including toilets flushing, TVs and general activity. We had to fall asleep to our neighbours watching an adult movie. Thankfully it didn’t go further, but it could have been worse. We paid $837 for two nights, Monday and Tuesday, which I don’t consider cheap. At that price I’d expect a quiet, functioning room. I run an Airbnb myself and understand industry standards. Given the condition and amenities, I don’t think this place should charge more than $250 a night, considering the location. I’d be ashamed to charge guests more for amenities like these. The area itself has a great vibe.

I’m Bronwyn Cookson, and I spent two weeks on holiday at Tallow Beach Motel just outside Byron Bay. The beach is across the little road, and I love that the place is completely dog friendly. The pool area is beautiful, and the staff were the best, with daily servicing too. I had a fabulous break and felt so welcome thanks to Frances and all the lovely staff. I’ll definitely visit again.

My parents stayed here while they were visiting me in Byron. I live in Suffolk, so the location worked perfectly for them, away from the crowds in town, with the beach right across the road. The place was super clean, and the staff were so helpful, friendly and attentive. The front rooms have a nice cottage and Bali-style feel. We’re grateful for everything, and I highly recommend it.

Free upgrade and early check-in, and they took such thoughtful care of our pet. We felt safe the whole time. This place was a lovely surprise, not your average motel at all. Service was unsurpassed, the rooms were clean, and the pool area was spotless and inviting. Shops and a dog-friendly beach are an easy walk away. Australia’s most eastern Motel is a gem, and it exceeded every expectation. We’ll definitely come back. Thank you so much. Xoxo
