Lord Wolseley Hotel

We loved the area and mostly walked everywhere. The hotel is close to the light rail, restaurants, harbours and shops, in a quiet neighbourhood. Our room was clean and functional, with a comfortable bed. Staff were friendly and helpful, even finding me a hair dryer at the last minute. My husband startled a cockroach in the bathroom one night, but it didn’t bother us much since we’re used to a similar warm, humid climate. We visited at the end of summer and start of fall, and the fan and open window kept us comfortable. There’s no central air or heating, so summer or winter might be less pleasant if room climate control is important to you. Some rooms have an ensuite, while others use a shared bathroom. There’s also a small shared kitchenette, but no fridge. Good choice if you enjoy walking and don’t mind stairs.

The staff, especially the girls downstairs, were polite and friendly, but the facilities and service overall fell short for me. The main problem was discovering that the bathroom and kitchen were shared. That wasn’t clearly stated when I booked, and for the price, I think it should have been disclosed upfront. It was hot, and they didn’t provide an extra fan. The ceiling fan barely moved any air, so the room was uncomfortable. I wouldn’t recommend staying unless you know about the shared facilities and are fine with them.

We stayed six nights and found it great value. The pub is small, cute and charming, with clean rooms and friendly staff. Cafes are nearby, and it’s only a 3-4 minute walk to the light rail. You can walk easily to the city, Haymarket, Pyrmont, the fish markets and Tambalong. If simple rooms and shared bathrooms suit you, I’d definitely recommend it.

Great food and a handy little kitchenette. The rooms are neat and clean, and the staff are really friendly and helpful. It’s a fantastic area, close to everything. Just remember there’s no lift, so you’ll be carrying your luggage upstairs. Definitely recommend 👌
