Peppers The Hills Lodge

The conference food had a good variety and was excellent, and the team looked after us well. Everyone was happy to help and make changes when needed. I was impressed with the conference facilities, rooms and staff at Peppers The Hills Lodge. The recently renovated rooms are well appointed in an understated style. Having three EV chargers was handy too.

We stayed in room 64. The bed was good, the room was comfortable and clean, and the TV was well positioned. Room service was genuinely excellent, and the place could be relaxing when maintenance problems weren't getting in the way. For the price, though, I expected a much better experience. The biggest problem was that the bathroom flooded every time we drained the bathtub. There were also cracks in the walls, a constantly flickering bathroom light, and a balcony screen door that was hard to open. At night only two of the five pool lights worked. The property needs more attention to upkeep. Service depended a lot on who was working, and we saw different staff each day, which gave the impression of high turnover. Check-in was excellent, but later interactions were disappointing. At breakfast, one staff member seemed as though he didn't want to be there. The pool closes at 7pm, which feels too early, especially during daylight saving when it stays light past 8. If you've spent the day exploring and return in the evening, it's nearly impossible to use it. The property has potential, but the maintenance issues and uneven service kept it from delivering what its price suggests.

The staff were friendly, professional and helpful when asked. They even left a birthday card and a complimentary drink voucher in my room. We liked being able to crack open the windows for fresh air, and the rooms were clean and tidy. The bedroom curtains did a great job blocking light. Tea, coffee and the usual supplies were there, but casting to the TV wasn't available despite the TV advertising it. The programme menu was hard to use, and the WiFi wasn't great. The gardens were pretty and well kept. Breakfast was fine: the food was fresh and the platters were topped up quickly, though the choices were basic and espresso cost extra. The bartender was friendly, and we enjoyed a drink at the bar before heading upstairs, odd jazz music and all. There are lots of stairs to reach the rooms, with no warning at booking, no lift and no accessible alternative. The bathrooms were strangely laid out, with lots of room overall but tiny showers that weren't very accessible. Carpets and walls between rooms looked dingy and needed maintenance. I wouldn't choose it for a romantic getaway, but it was pleasant enough for business or an event.

The function space suited the event I attended, and it was seamless to step out of my room straight into it. I'd especially recommend Peppers The Hills Lodge when event guests need accommodation. There was also a welcome buffet breakfast option. From arrival, the Tudor-style accommodation and grounds made a lovely impression. Staff were attentive and professional, the room was spacious and well equipped, and the restaurant and bar offered relaxed dining with a touch of class.
