I was exhausted after nine straight hours of driving and couldn’t manage another minute on the road, so I pulled in and paid for a room. I asked about food, then whether I could buy a couple of slices of bread and some cheese. I was told, “We don’t eat bread,” and that the nearest food was 7 km away. I’d hoped there might at least be biscuits in the room, but there weren’t. I had 500 ml of milk with me, so a couple of lattes ended up being dinner. The room was dusty and musty, and the bedding and towels smelled too. None of the country hospitality I’d usually expect. Avoid.

The bed was okay and the linen clean, and the room had chlorine-free mineral water connected to the shower and spa, though some jets didn’t work. That was about all I could find to like. This overpriced, run-down motel needs serious maintenance and renovation. The sauna area was filthy with cockroaches, had no lights and a hole in the ceiling, and the heating elements barely worked. Watch out for the rainwater: the filter hadn’t been changed for a long time, and we found worms in the water. The restaurant was shut, there were no cooking facilities in the room, and I had to find the unclean guest kitchen myself.

The rooms are airy, comfortable and super clean, with lots of space and privacy in a bush setting. Staff were professional, yet friendly and helpful, and the price was very competitive for the service and quality. We visit the Toowoomba area often, and Lockyer Motel will be our choice now. It’s close to Toowoomba and offers a better package than so many motels there.

I was so bloody lucky to be here today. During the 2011 Queensland floods, my mum, sister and I were coming back from Brisbane and stayed here. There was no electricity and very little food, basically nothing except beds. The staff were pretty nice, I’m pretty sure, but I almost got killed.

I usually rate this place highly, but this visit was a different room and a letdown. The spa wasn’t as big, we ran out of hot water, the TV was unwatchable and the bed felt like a springboard, so I couldn’t sleep. Next time we’ll book the usual room we’ve stayed in before, which was five-star.
