We had a comfortable, enjoyable New Year stay in Long John’s Cottage at Robin Hood’s Well Farm Stay. The place was set up well for self-catering, with a large comfy bed, inviting and stylish rooms, and even classic card games for families. The cottage sits among lovely gardens, birds and magnificent horses, with the red soils and rolling hills of Sassafras all around. They also sell several types of honey in a shed on the property, where you can taste before buying. Sassafras worked well as a base for northern Tasmania. We could drive to Sheffield, beaches, national parks, Railton, Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm, Anvers Chocolates and Reliquaire in nearby Latrobe, Ashgrove Cheese and the Tasmanian Arboretum. It’s also not far from the Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal, so it could suit travellers wanting a nearby place to stay. The entrance is off the busy Bass Highway, where traffic goes past quickly, but the accommodation is far enough back that the noise wasn’t a major problem for us. We’d definitely stay again.

We booked three nights but left early, and this was a real disappointment. The walk in was short but overgrown, and the deck over the dam was rotting. The owners were close by in a staff-only area but didn’t come over to say hello. Large dogs jumped onto the balcony while we tried to eat breakfast, and with no outdoor table we had to balance our food on our knees. The bathroom curtain covered only half the window and was white, so people could see in. The manager/owner came out in jocks to get wood. There were always clothes in the washer and dryer, so we couldn’t use them. Highway traffic was very close and visible, and noisy. The rules said to take off our shoes and use the dish rack, but it was freezing and the floor was tiled. I’ve stayed at lots of farmstays and wouldn’t call this one a farmstay. The listing advertised a sofa, but there wasn’t one.

We loved the little honey store and the gardens on site. The host was always responsive, and the location was lovely, close to lots of towns and activities. It was a great place for our New Year stay and let us explore the region more thoroughly.

The view from the gorgeous Garden Studio was lovely, and it made for a great little getaway. The honey is awesome, too. Thanks, Stacy 🥰 We’ll definitely return, maybe for a girls’ trip in the homestead.

We stayed on the farm in April 2025 and had a lovely time. The hosts are warm and genuine, and you can tell how much they care about the environment and the horses they look after. It’s wonderfully peaceful, while still close to anything you might need. Thanks for having us at your amazing property. And the honey is to die for 😁
