Chabiant Winery Hotel

The tandoor bread at breakfast was still so hot it was hard to pick up at first, and the coyotes in the surrounding mountains made the stay even more unusual. This remote village in the Ismayilli region has little else in the way of entertainment or infrastructure besides the winery, but the tour, tasting, and overnight stay there made for the most memorable part of our trip to Azerbaijan. Sasha spoke excellent Russian, and the boys helped create a wonderful atmosphere.

We found it while looking through Lonely Planet, and even though it wasn't in the classic “WORTH THE TRIP” box, it absolutely deserves the trip. Sasha was friendly, and winemaker Marco Catelani's expertise really stood out. The wines are clean and harmonious, sometimes focused on immediate appeal and aroma, sometimes on length. They've started a process of technical improvement in the vineyard and cellar, and from tasting several wines from the barrels, they're off to a strong start and heading in the right direction. The Madrasa and Bayan Shira are must-tries, as is the upcoming Sauvignon Blanc. Well done, your determination should pay off. A must-stop in AZB!

We went as a group of about 15 and toured the wine production and storage areas, which left us with a great feeling. At the dining table we tried more than 10 different, delicious wines, along with excellent cheeses. The PR manager told us about the wines. After that we kept sitting by the pool, and it made for a different kind of day. You should go and stay at the hotel for the first time.

The place isn't modern or spick and span, though it is neat and clean. What makes it an experience you hope to find in this gem of Azerbaijan is the surrounding area and the whole atmosphere. Wow!!
