Hullehuis

It's 2:24 am, I haven't slept at all, and we need to be up at 7:00 tomorrow for work nearby. I'm lying on a leather couch that's only 1.20 meters long. The listing made it sound like a house for six, but there are five of us: two have something you might call a bed, two are in what look like kids' dog kennels, and the last person is stuck on a stretcher made from 15 metal tubes with a 1 cm mattress. You wouldn't even put a prisoner on that.

We were five people staying from December 22-27, 2024. The house itself is beautiful, but it feels poorly and carelessly managed. When we arrived in the evening during winter, the kitchen was 17 degrees and the rest of the house was even colder. A few days later the heating stopped working. I called the landlady, but the conversation wasn't very cordial. The rooms stayed cold, with draughts coming through gaps around the doors and under the front door. We ended up making our own door draft stopper. There were plenty of other problems: the doorbell was broken, the TV didn't work, the toilet door handle had come off, and kitchen utensils were broken, dirty, or lacking. In a house rented for 6-7 people, there were only five different glasses. The dishwasher wasn't secured properly, and the freezer compartment was so full of ice that its door wouldn't close. We were very disappointed.

We had a really nice stay at the Hullehuis. Kasper was a wonderful host, and our daughter loved having the bunk bed with doors as her own little hideaway. Lotenhulle is a lovely community, and the terrace at Lieven's is a cozy spot to unwind.

We had such a relaxing weekend in a lovely cottage full of character. The Poeke castle estate is an easy walk away, and there’s a bakery, butcher, and local supermarket nearby too.
