The best part for me was how welcoming everyone felt. Chris and Merel greeted me warmly, and the other guests were kind and considerate. Even with a mixed half male, half female dorm, there wasn’t much noise or anyone staying up extremely late. I arrived early in the morning, well before check-in, and Chris had already shared lots of good places to visit in Antwerpen. Check-in is usually at 15:00, but my room was ready by 14:15. The room itself was very nice, and the showers were great. Renting a towel cost less than it did in Lisbon. The kitchen is huge and useful, with two dishwashers, two fridges, and two microwaves. I really loved my stay here. That warm, human welcome, along with the kindness of most of the guests, made it a great hostel.

A basic, laid-back hostel that’s cheap and has what you need. The location makes getting around easy, with the central train station and opera metro and tram stops close by. Chinatown and a grocery store are within easy walking distance too. There’s also a street with casinos nearby, where you can find late-night food, especially if you like North African or Mediterranean food. Our private room was clean and didn’t smell. It had two twin beds, a big work table, and an en-suite bathroom. The comforter wasn’t too hot in December, and it was easy to switch off the radiator and open the window for air. With the window cracked, some highway noise came in, but it was still quiet enough to sleep well. The bathroom fan didn’t work, and the shower head was broken, though still usable. They’re strict about no smoking and use fragrance-free laundry detergent on the linens. There’s a free, efficient double kitchen in the common area, plus eating and study rooms. The bar is quiet and serves breakfast in the morning, then hot chocolate, beer, and wine until 9:30.

The staff were kind, welcoming, and always ready to help. A woman at reception helped me find my way around and made sure I felt comfortable. Everyone seemed to have a positive energy and a smile for guests. I’d told Hostel Ash on Instagram that I’d arrive late on Sunday, and they replied quickly to say the night guard would help me check in. There was a small payment system glitch when I got there, and he wasn’t sure at first what was happening, but he stayed calm and made the whole process comfortable. His helpful manner really stood out. A wonderful place with lovely people. I can’t recommend Hostel Ash enough.

We got in close to midnight after the Neighborhood concert and still checked in pretty quickly. We didn’t feel like going to bed, so Guy stayed downstairs with us and chatted about all sorts of things. He was fun, kind, and awesome, and made the whole night for us. Such a memorable evening. Thanks for everything!

The place was clean, modern, quiet, and comfortable, and the service was really nice 👍. There’s free luggage storage in the basement 👍, but the only way back up is the elevator. The emergency exit leads outside, and there are no stairs up, so if the elevator is busy, you’re stuck downstairs 👎. Still, it was a nice experience :). Xoxo, Gossip girl
