Hof Ter Meulen

We went just to visit the butcher and have a look at the pigs and alpacas. The butcher was great!

The location was fantastic, and so was the alpaca farm. We’d just come back from a weekend with our volleyball team, and were disappointed by the house’s cleanliness and facilities. The oven was still greasy and crusted with dirt, the bathroom walls were filthy, and there was vermin everywhere, dead and alive. There was no smoke detector in the kitchen. The shower head was black with mold, and the door wouldn’t close fully. The upstairs room faucets gave off a really strong smell, and the kitchen wasn’t equipped for the number of people the house can accommodate. Such a shame. We deliberately spent as little time in the house as possible, even though the weather wasn’t great.

I had a fantastic alpaca walk today! The young woman was super friendly and told us lots about the alpacas. My alpaca loved the water and went straight into the sea to lie down in it. Such a great experience.

The location was excellent: only a five-minute drive from the beach, with a few shops nearby, and it was very quiet. There’s also a nice farm for children, with its own meat and other produce. The Oven House at Hof ter Meulen could be a fantastic holiday destination, but the hygiene was a huge letdown. We’ve never stayed somewhere so dirty. Our baby was pitch black after just fifteen minutes of crawling. There was food left on the stovetop, in the dishwasher, in the sink, and elsewhere. The extractor hood was pitch black, and after opening the oven once we didn’t dare open it again. We found toenails in several places, the sheets clearly hadn’t been changed, and there was black mold on the bathroom walls and shower tray, along with a huge clump of hair in the shower. We were shocked and contacted the owners straight away. They were shocked too and acted immediately: someone came to clean the mold and brought fresh sheets. We had to clean the rest of the cottage ourselves during the first two days of our holiday, though we eventually received financial compensation. We have no complaint about the owners, as they listened to us and helped. We’re writing this to warn future visitors that the cottage may be in very poor condition, so they should check the hygiene carefully. We hope the owners now take serious steps to check the cleaning company and clean the cottage thoroughly. If they don’t, we’ll post a clear warning here.
