Getaway Gent

The room was unbearably stuffy, with temperatures above 25 degrees, and we couldn’t sleep. There was no air conditioning, despite the website saying there was. After we complained, the listing was changed and they now say it never mentioned AC, though we have a screenshot. When we checked in, the room also smelled of sewage. Reception was rude when we raised the smell, as if we had no right to complain, and the hotel wouldn’t help find a solution, just told us to email. On checkout day, at 10:15 AM, a staff member came into the room without knocking, even though checkout wasn’t until 11:00 AM. Reception was rude again when we reported it. The woman picked up the phone and started talking in the middle of our conversation. Emailing got us nowhere either. Management has offered no solution and doesn’t seem interested. A very bad experience at Getaway Gent. We felt more comfortable sitting on a bench outside.

The old building has thin walls, so noise from nearby rooms and the corridor carries easily. The furnishings look worn from years of use and haven’t been updated, though the rooms still have what you need. In summer it gets quite warm, and without air conditioning or window screens, opening the windows can be difficult, especially on the courtyard side with all the mosquitoes. There’s no breakfast at the accommodation or nearby, and the kitchen has no oven or similar appliance. Rooms also aren’t cleaned during longer stays. On the plus side, the apartment hotel is centrally located, connects directly to underground parking, and is clean on the surface, with useful extras such as an iron.

The bed was absolute heaven, and the room had its own normal heating, an ironing board and fast, good WiFi. The center is only a three-minute walk away, with a tram and groceries nearby. The building has a cool style, and the room includes a kitchen and fridge. There’s secure private parking close by, plus public parking next door, and a lot of things are self-service. Sound insulation could be better. We heard a lot from the neighboring room, and the neighbors themselves were quite noisy. The bathroom light, which shines down from the ceiling, isn’t very handy for shaving. No breakfast options, so you’ll need to buy your own. Still, a great stay.

The room seemed clean and decent, and the location is great. But there’s no air conditioning, so hot weather could be a problem. Noise was the main issue for me. I could hear everything, from footsteps and talking to people dropping things. The website, including Booking, claimed the rooms were soundproof, which is why I chose this place over another option. I complained on the first day, but they were fully booked and couldn’t move me. I’d wanted a room on a higher floor because it should be quieter. If noise doesn’t bother you, this could be a good place. Otherwise, I’d avoid it.
