D-Hotel Kortrijk

Skip it. You can easily find better places, and this really isn't a 4-star hotel. We stayed one night using a SmartBox and added 40 euro. The spa was very basic, as were the rooms, with extremely small beds and not even a small bottle of water in the room. At check-in, nobody mentioned city taxes, and we were given the wrong breakfast time. They said 7am, but breakfast actually started at 8am. At 6pm the afternoon before, I pointed out the mistake and asked if we could eat earlier or get breakfast to take away, since we had to leave before 8am. The reply was, "I put a note in the system but I don't know if they will see it". From 6pm until the next morning, apparently nobody was available to sort out their own miscommunication. We left before 8am without breakfast and heard nothing from them. When I called later that morning to check if everything was okay, they told me about the city taxes. I also asked if they could give us the bottle of water we ordered for free to make up for breakfast being missed by two people. They refused, saying, "breakfast was included in the smartbox". We still had to add 40 euro to it. And really, a small bottle of water in the room would be a nice welcome for guests.

The lobby makes a great first impression, and the hotel itself is nice. Part of it sits under an old windmill, while the rooms are fairly new and modern. But you’ll end up keeping the curtains closed. The rooms have details that need work, even though the hotel could be great. The bathroom is open, with a glass wall and no door, which seems like a bad setup if you're sharing a two-bed room with a colleague or someone else. You also have to turn the lights on from the center console, so you walk in in the dark. The toilet water is literally yellow, like it’s the same water being flushed again and again. Kind of disgusting. The thermostat didn't work properly either. The room stayed at 18 degrees when it was set to 21, and the cleaning stuff kept resetting it to that freezing temperature. I had to set it to 30 degrees to get the room to 21.

The rooms were clean and quiet, and breakfast was good. It’s a unique hotel in a peaceful location, with an excellent wellness centre.

The beds were clean and comfortable, and check-in was smooth and professional. On arrival, we grabbed an ice-cold beer from the fridge and sat in the lovely courtyard in the summer breeze. The architecture is phenomenal, with a sophisticated, tasteful mix of modern and rustic. We enjoyed our stay so much that we're planning to return this summer.
