Begijnhof Hotel

A cozy, smaller hotel with a pleasant atmosphere and very friendly, helpful staff. My room was on the small side. I booked late, and for me the price felt a bit high.

The garden is beautiful, and the setting is peaceful and quiet. We took an Uber to the city centre, though you can walk there in 20-30 minutes. The hotel serves breakfast only. We included it when booking on their website; it tasted good, but the options and consistency weren’t great. Some days there was only brown bread, and the juice selection varied from several choices to none. At €22 per person, I found it overpriced. Our room was modern and minimalist, and the refurbishments I’d read about before booking seemed real. There was a hanger but no wardrobe. There’s no room phone; instead, a tablet lets you call or message reception. It didn’t work for the first few days, which was a big inconvenience, but they fixed it. We also had a few minor issues that were the hotel’s fault. They acknowledged them and said they’d do “something” at checkout. I assumed that meant a small discount for the trouble, but nothing happened. I didn’t ask, to be fair, as a different person was at reception that day. We found the mattress and pillows uncomfortable. The baby crib we requested was provided and was fine. Overall, the prices reflect the good cleanliness and modern interior, but the service wasn’t the best I’ve experienced. For what they offer, it’s definitely expensive by my standards. What counts as expensive can vary from country to country, but they could do better or lower the prices a little.

The service was courteous and cordial. Without a full kitchen on site, breakfast was minimal, but the quality was good. The toasted Belgian waffles stood out, crunchy outside and light and airy inside. The rooms seemed designed to balance function and atmosphere. They preserve the history of the place as a convent or monastery, while the successful modernization includes antique-looking wooden sculptures and paintings. A great hotel, and I’d definitely stay again on my next trip.

A lovely, quiet stay in a beautiful hotel. It’s a little far from coffee shops, the train station, and the town centre, but only about a 20-minute walk.
