Van Der Valk Hotel Mons Congres

I was here for one night on a business trip. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the reception staff were helpful and friendly. The restaurant team were friendly too, and the food was tasty and reasonably priced. Breakfast had plenty of options, including fresh omelets made by a chef and a pancake machine. The buffet area felt congested, though, and moving around was difficult when people queued for pancakes. The boiled eggs were cold. The hotel is next to the train station and has free parking.

The hotel is swanky and has a great restaurant. Reception and restaurant staff speak good English, and they appreciate it if you try speaking French. Mons isn’t really a holiday destination; its main claim to fame is that SHAPE, the European headquarters of NATO, is here.

We stopped here on the way home from vacation and were struck by how friendly the staff were to our daughter and our dog. They welcomed our big dog warmly and treated us like family. The restaurant has a separate kids’ play area, like an indoor playground, while keeping a chic dining atmosphere. I can highly recommend it to anyone traveling with kids or pets!

Updated: My flight was cancelled, so I couldn’t arrive on schedule for the two nights I’d booked. I told the hotel I’d only need the room for one night. They said I’d still be charged for both, but that my room would be available if I arrived early. I accepted those terms, as stated in the fine print, and continued my trip. When I got there, reception told me the room wasn’t available, yet I was charged for both nights. I’ve stayed at Van der Valk Hotel Mons several times and usually had good experiences. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and it’s impressively quiet with no disturbances. The breakfast is excellent, with fresh juice, great bread, and an egg station for omelets and more, although it’s a bit pricey. The fitness room is too small, and both treadmills were out of order on my last stay. The wellness area, on the other hand, is very nice after a long day of work or travel. The location is excellent, especially now that the new train station is open, with public transport, a shopping center, and several restaurants nearby. The cozy hotel bar serves good drinks, but prices are high.
