Holiday Home Juliette

Getting around was a struggle for us. I’d mentioned that I was 65 and travelling with my 85-year-old uncle, but the sleeping setup was a pull-out sofa bed we had to make ourselves, and I wondered if that was suitable for someone his age. The stairs had a top step about two inches deep and two inches high, which seemed unsafe for a 65-year-old, especially since the handrail couldn’t really be grasped for support. We couldn’t park outside, so we unloaded the bags and then drove to a safe public car park some distance away. The centre itself isn’t far, but my uncle would have struggled with the walk. My 63-year-old brother-in-law, who has a 'new knee', needed a rest halfway to the main central area. There were positives: I was happy with the upstairs bed, kitchen, and shower. The bedding and towels were clean, the water was lovely and hot, the utensils were all there, and the outside area was nice. Communication was very good too. The place and its people, along with how clean Belgium is and how respectfully its WW1 sites are cared for, helped make up for the problems. I can imagine younger couples with children or teens being fine here, but those stairs are still on my mind, and I wonder whether local authorities ever check holiday lets for safety. I didn’t complain and paid the full asking price, so that’s on me.
