The owners were very friendly and straightforward, and the price felt fair, even if this isn’t a cheap place. This holiday home sleeps groups of up to 16 and is tucked away in a beautiful, out-of-the-way location. It used to be a restaurant, so the kitchen is professional and fully equipped. There’s private parking and space for bikes, and the bedrooms and bathrooms are well maintained. There’s also lots of art around the house, including paintings, statues, and ceramics.

We chose 't Leeghuys for a week with the family partly because of the good reviews, the advertised accessibility for people with disabilities, and the single bedroom. Several things about the stay were disappointing, and we can’t recommend it. Accessibility and layout were major problems. Although the house is advertised as accessible, high thresholds, narrow passages, and a slippery downstairs bathroom floor made it unsafe and unsuitable for wheelchair users and people using walking aids. The upper floor is reached only by a narrow, steep staircase. The only single room is in the attic and feels more like a storage closet. In one bedroom, the toilet is right beside the bed, with only a curtain between them. The house is spacious but awkwardly laid out, and filled with “art” and objects, including nude statues that may not appeal to everyone. Cleanliness also fell short. There was visible dust under beds and on the ceiling. Many kitchen dishes were sticky or dusty, so we washed them again. Some bathrooms had mold or were poorly cleaned, with dirty grout and blocked drains. We had agreed to arrive at 2:00 PM, but nobody was there when we got to the house. Calls and messages got no response. The door finally opened after more than an hour. The landlord said they had been “enjoying the good life” and had fallen asleep. It was a strange, uncomfortable welcome. During the week, the landlords stayed in a small wooden building attached to the house, with two cars, and had visitors, including someone with a horse trailer. Parking nearby was often difficult. One day, sawing and construction work in the outbuilding continued all day and made a lot of noise. The internet didn’t work during our stay. The hosts tried to help but didn’t seem to understand the issue. Explaining it didn’t get us anywhere, and they eventually walked away. Just before we left, one of us accidentally knocked a small painting off the wall in a narrow passage. It was hung at shoulder height and was damaged when it fell. We reported it right away. We were then told it was worth €2,500 and that we had to pay that amount. There was no room for an ordinary conversation, and the tone quickly turned harsh and accusatory. We lost the €250 cash deposit we had paid on arrival, which wasn’t returned. We’ve never been treated this way at a place we stayed. The communication, hygiene, accessibility, and way the damage and deposit were handled all left us very unhappy.

The welcome was friendly, and the place is tucked away so quietly that you barely see it. Great for walks or bike rides. The peacock and rooster can get a little loud now and then. There’s parking with a plug to charge an EV.

There’s lots to like about this charming house and its lovely outdoor space. A couple of things indoors do need urgent attention, though: the kitchen has no hot water, and the shower head can’t be fixed in place. Still, it didn’t spoil our stay 😉

A basic but spacious holiday home, great for hiking and excellent value for money. The owners are super friendly.
