(This post refers to the restaurant.) I chose to email Altenbroek directly and fill in the satisfaction survey they sent, rather than post on Google straight away. I felt it wasn't fair to rate the place after just one visit. I assume the survey email goes automatically to anyone booking through the hotel website. Three weeks have passed without anyone from the hotel contacting me, so I've decided to share what happened here. My wife and I both took a day off on January 30th to drive to the countryside in South Limburg. We planned a long walk and lunch at the hotel restaurant. We had booked directly through the hotel's website, but when we arrived there was no chef, and the restaurant couldn't be used because drilling and refurbishment work was underway. For a hotel and restaurant at this level, that wasn't really acceptable. We had to leave without eating. Given where the hotel is, you can imagine we couldn't find anywhere else nearby to eat or drink. I still don't know what went wrong that day.

The breakfast was definitely plentiful, the lounge is beautiful, and the staff were very friendly. It's a charming hotel in a beautiful location, and I had a great stay overall. Some details could have made the experience even better: the rooms didn't feel very well cared for, and when I asked for tea, half the options were empty boxes. Still, I had an amazing time.

A lovely park, and the bar and terrace are great. It's a beautiful, original hotel tucked away in a quiet spot near a forest on the NL border. The room was nice, but it was above the breakfast room, so on Sunday I woke at 6:45 to the prep work below. In the evening, the guy above kept walking around endlessly on a squeaky floor.

The room was clean, and the bed was big and comfortable. Breakfast had a fairly standard selection, but the food was good, and the bar felt cozy with soft jazz. The area around the hotel is beautiful, with lots of trails for walking. Sleep was the problem for me. We were in room 115, right above the bar, and the building has very poor sound insulation. Even the quietly played jazz carried loudly into our room. The radiator also buzzed nonstop, even when switched off, and we could hear the people upstairs as if they were in our room. I’m a light sleeper, so getting a decent night’s rest was almost impossible. There’s plenty of charm and comfort here if you sleep deeply. For someone like me, especially in room 115, it wasn’t a good fit.

The grounds are worth taking time to explore, with bike and walking paths, a terrace, and the restaurant. It’s a bit out of the way from any major city, but I thought the detour was worthwhile. The chateau feels underrated and underused. I also noticed a basement bar that was closed; it could make a great speakeasy-style spot. The tasting menu is a must for food lovers, and worth the cost. The wine list was very good and affordable for what you get. The wait staff were attentive and friendly, and the service was impeccable and professional. We loved both the hotel and the food. One small thought: I’d lose the black gloves. They didn’t seem necessary or clearly more hygienic, and felt too formal for the relaxed, semi-casual atmosphere. A small fountain in the ponds might also help with the standing water and make them look nicer. The rest is perfect.
