Hotel Kapitanova Kashta

We were a group of 10 adults and 6 children, already on our way from Romania after crossing the border, when the host cancelled just hours before check-in because of a “hornets invasion.” We said we accepted the risk, but they didn’t care. We’d booked the whole villa two or three months in advance. Booking showed nine available, identical villas, which we assumed might be an operational error, but there is only one in reality. It looked to us like overbooking so they could take the most profitable offer. Booking’s response was another major letdown. We told them what had happened, but they still didn’t seem to care. How could they allow nine identical listings for an old property in a protected village without finding that suspicious? Other customers may get the same “hospitable” treatment. Worst experience ever!

So peaceful up in the Balkan mountains, at a guest house at the end of the road in a town at the end of the highway. The food was fantastic, the atmosphere great, and the surroundings beautiful. Try the homemade rakia, bean soup, and baklava!

The reason given was a “hornets invasion.” There was no further explanation, just contact numbers so we could try to find somewhere else. It was a public holiday and everywhere was full; none of the options worked for our whole group or the full stay. From the start of the reservation, three months earlier, the owner had seemed strange. He had listed nine villas despite there being only one on the property. We worried about a double booking, but he assured us it was fine, and even the day before arrival he said nothing about hornets or any other problem. We’ve heard other people had the same awful experience with this manager cancelling for different reasons, like a broken pipe or insect nests supposedly found at the last minute. A complete waste of time.

The kitchen is really good, and the service was excellent. It’s clean, cozy and comfortable, with big rooms in a very good location. I’ll be back ❣
