Breakfast was good, and the tea was homemade. Borovets ski resort is about 12 minutes away, which makes this a handy winter base. The house sits outside the city centre on a main road, but we weren't bothered by traffic noise. Our room was warm, clean and tidy, the bed was comfortable, and the people were very polite.

We got really helpful advice on the main hiking routes in the Rila mountains and nearby trails. The owners were kind and friendly, and spoke Russian and English. Our room was simple, clean and comfortable, with a balcony. The natural, traditional food was tasty, and you can choose dinner from a rich menu in the morning.

The women running this homely, clean and comfortable guesthouse were amazing. They did everything they could to help us and made us feel at home. I've never had that kind of welcome anywhere else. Breakfast and dinner are available on request.

From Samokov, there's a bus to Borovetz every 30 minutes during the open ski season, and prices for things are much better in town. That makes this a smart place to stay if you want the freedom of a hostel with the comfort of a family hotel. Why spend extra on a hotel, food and drinks at the Borovetz resort when you could save that money for something fun, like a flight over the mountains? I highly recommend it.
